EU Commission Order to Spain: Improve Alicante Drinking Water

Drinking water in Europe is protected by the EU Drinking Water Directive.  The Directive ensures that water intended for human consumption is wholesome and clean. If drinking water is not up to standard, remedial action and restrictions are to be put in place.

On 16 June the EU Commission asked Spain to improve the quality of drinking water in Las Filipinas, an area in San Miguel de Salinas, Alicante, Spain. The Commission found that local residents have suffered from water that is not fit for human consumption for more than a decade. No one disputes this fact. If Spain does not fulfill this legal obligation, the Commission may refer the case to the EU Court of Justice.
