Do California Central Coast Rules Threaten Agricultural Sustainability?

Agricultural water use can result in an increase in nitrate and other contaminants in agricultural return flows.  The Central Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board will be voting in September on new rules which will have a significant impact on agricultural sustainability in the Central Coast region. In the most practical sense “sustainability” means the ability of farms in this region to continue in business at all given current economic conditions. To environmental activists “sustainability” means something altogether different…they say full speed ahead with the new rules, but those knowledgable in agriculture say whoa not so fast….these rules will put many farmers out of business.
