Hydraulic fracturing poses low risk for inducing seismic events

A new report from the National Research Council concludes hydraulic fracturing has a low risk for inducing earthquakes that can be felt by people. Click here or image below for the report.

Underground injection of wastewater produced by hydraulic fracturing and other energy technologies has a higher risk of causing such earthquakes. Carbon capture and storage may have the potential for inducing seismic events, because significant volumes of fluids are injected underground over long periods of time. This should not be a surprise…..carbon capture and storage has a much greater potential to migrate into drinking water aquifers, changing water chemistry and mobilizing contaminants.
