CO2 is a coolant in the Earth’s thermosphere

This is a very interesting paper. Since it is subscription only I suggest reading the discussion here.

Martin G. Mlynczak, Linda A. Hunt, Christopher J. Mertens, B. Thomas Marshall, James M. Russell III, Thomas Woods, R. Earl Thompson and Larry L. Gordley. Influence of solar variability on the infrared radiative cooling of the thermosphere from 2002 to 2014. Geophysical Research Letters. DOI: 10.1002/2014GL059556

Infrared radiative cooling of the thermosphere by carbon dioxide (CO2, 15 µm) and by nitric oxide (NO, 5.3 µm) has been observed for 12 years by the SABER instrument on the TIMED satellite. For the first time we present a record of the two most important thermospheric infrared cooling agents over a complete solar cycle. SABER has documented dramatic variability in the radiative cooling on timescales ranging from days to the 11-year solar cycle. Deep minima in global mean vertical profiles of radiative cooling are observed in 2008–2009. Current solar maximum conditions, evidenced in the rates of radiative cooling, are substantially weaker than prior maximum conditions in 2002–2003. The observed changes in thermospheric cooling correlate well with changes in solar ultraviolet irradiance and geomagnetic activity during the prior maximum conditions. NO and CO2 combine to emit 7 x 1018 more Joules annually at solar maximum than at solar minimum.

Meet Mr. Leland Yee, poster-man for the corrupt California Senate

“Call it “American Hustle” gone West. An elaborate FBI sting culminated this week after two undercover officers — who posed as East Coast Mafia members — helped take down 26 Californians, including an influential state senator with alleged ties to an Asian mob.” click here

I REFUSE: So should students and parents

“Parents in New York State and across the nation are saying “I Refuse” to Common Core centralized standards, testing, and student data collection, and are putting their words into action through civil disobedience.” click here

Sotomayor, Kagan say Hobby Lobby should cancel health insurance

“During oral arguments in the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday which focused on whether the contraceptive mandate in the Affordable Care Act violates the free exercise of religion, Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan suggested employers who have moral objections to birth control should not provide health care coverage for their employees.” click here

This is judicial tyranny at its worst.

Dental fluorosis in paediatric patients

GS Atia, J May. Dental fluorosis in the paediatric patient. Dent Update. 2013 Dec;40(10):836-9.

Exposure to excessive fluoride intake during the early childhood years can disrupt the normal development of enamel, resulting in dental fluorosis. This varies in severity, ranging from white opacities in mild cases to more severe black and brown discoloration or enamel pitting. This article aims to give the reader a better understanding of the aetiology, diagnosis and subsequent treatment of dental fluorosis in the paediatric patient.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Fluorosis can have a marked effect on dental aesthetics. The prevalence of fluorosis in the United Kingdom may increase following the publication of Delivering Better Oral Health, published by the Department of Health in 2007, which suggested changes to fluoride levels in children’s toothpastes. This article highlights the importance of accurate diagnosis of fluorosis and also explains the treatment options available to paediatric patients.

WHO World Health Report 2000 was a fraud

“In fact, World Health Report 2000 was an intellectual fraud of historic consequence—a profoundly deceptive document that is only marginally a measure of health-care performance at all. The report’s true achievement was to rank countries according to their alignment with a specific political and economic ideal—socialized medicine—and then claim it was an objective measure of “quality.” “
